At a time when criticism of the national military was reaching its peak, Hasbro introduced the first GI Joe. The year was 1964, and the twelve-inch doll came in four basic action styles: Marine, Soldier, Sailor, Pilot. Joe also came in four basic hair colors: black, brown, blonde, and auburn. There was also a black version to represent other national groups. Three years later, GI Joe could talk, and in the same year, a female nurse was introduced. From 1970 - 1976, the primary Adventure Teams included: the Black Adventurer, the Talking Astronaut, the Talking Team Commander, the Sea Adventurer, and the Land Adventurer, with a number of variations. The hands were made from rubber so that the action figures could grasp many tools and weapons. Other accessories in the playsets included primarily clothing and vehicles.

By 1976, the dolls were discontinued as the War overseas wound down and lost its popularity. In 1982, a smaller version was brought out, measuring less then 4 inches. Surveys indicated their popularity and they were well received by the public as expected, including a line of miniature accessories. They turned out to be the most popular series. Most collectors seek mint items in the original packaging, not your average joe Hawaii that looks as if they have been through the ringer of a GI Joe body massage and a few wars in the garden out back. Remember, these are kids toys, so finding them in top quality condition is harder. Other unusual but associated items can include a GI Joe spoof or GI Joe parody, but these are not part of the official lines. Oddly, there has been a parallel with the equally powerful, though fantasy creation known as The Incredible Hulk who has military associations and represents a powerful role model for the children. 15hqqx.
